I just finished reading the book “Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper. It is an excellent book and challenged me (and continues to) in many areas of my life.
One of the chapters that was enlightening to me was “Making Much of Christ From 8 to 5”. It was basically about not wasting your life at your secular job. Now, most of you know I don’t have an 8-5 job. I have a 24-7 job(working with my little sinners). So, I looked at this chapter and how it relates to a stay-at-home mom, homemaker type person.
Some of the quotes that really hit me were:
“…we should be busy understanding and shaping and designing and using God’s creation in a way that calls attention to his worth and wakens worship.”
“If you are not God, but like God – that is, if you are human your work is to take what God has made and shape it and use it to make him look great.”
So, the questions I ask myself are:
First of all, am I busy with God’s work?
Am I using the time God has given me in a way that honors Him?
Am I raising and training my children in a way that glorifies God? or that causes God to be glorified through them?
Am I doing the laundry and making meals in a way that would give glory to Him? (I know that may sound kind of dumb to some people but this is where I am at.) Do I do the laundry when someone says they are out of socks, or do the daily upkeep so I and my family can give God the glory for it being done. Not only being thankful that it is kept up but if I stay on top of things and quit wasting my life on the internet, tv, books or whatever I will be organized enough to use my house to glorify God. Being hospitable and inviting people over and not being worried if the house is clean or if there is food to eat. Having a menu plan so I can bring an additional meal to someone in need.
NOT THAT I MAY BE GLORIFIED BUT THAT HE WILL.
Just some of my random thoughts, but you really should read the book.
