Journey to a Healthier Me: How I Started Exercising

In January I found myself not having exercised for at least 4 months. Even before that, it was few and far between. I knew part of living healthier would mean I that I needed to get my body moving.

It was winter, in Minnesota. A mild winter but still a little too chilly to go walking. I wasn’t going to join a gym because that just wasn’t in the budget. I had one exercise DVD and whatever Netflix had to offer. I decided to try out a 10 minute video on Netflix. I thought 10 minutes a day would be a good, slow start and it was.

The next couple of weeks I decided to go for 20 minutes and did my workout DVD with Denise Austin. I alternated cardio and weight lifting on the weekdays. I know she’s kind of old school, but she’s been with me through thick and thicker. I’ve been exercising to her videos since I got married 14 years ago. I don’t know why I always enjoyed exercising with her, maybe it was her big smile and encouraging words.

I knew I had to move past Denise this time. I knew that I couldn’t just stick with this DVD the whole time. My body would get used to it or I would get bored with it. I  would need to switch it up.

See what I decided to switch to next week!

Weight  last week: 167 lbs.

Weight this week: 166.5 lbs.

Total weight loss this year: 17.5 lbs.

Half a pound doesn’t seem like much but that’s 2 sticks of butter! I am excited that I am still losing. I’m also excited that it’s time to buy a new pair of jeans, because mine are just too big!

What is your favorite DVD to workout to?

  1. I’m so excited for you! And really, half a pound is nothing to sneeze at, a loss is a loss, right? 🙂

I’m sloooowly getting myself back into the swing of exercising regularly. I bought a DVD set from an infomercial years ago (Turbo Jam) and it really worked well for me then, so I’m doing it again. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve changed up to next week!
