DVD’s are a great way to get some exercise in those cold winter months, but it’s almost summer now. Time to get your exercise on outside! Enjoy some fresh air, flowers blooming, and wave to the neighbors that you havent seen all winter.
One of the ways I started getting my exercise outside is walking. I wanted to amp it up and I decided to do a c25k training.
What is c25k? C25k is an anagram for Couch to 5 kilometers. It is a training that gets you from sitting on the couch to running a 5k in 9 weeks (your results may vary.)
As I started my journey this year, I knew that this spring I would be going through this training and I would use the Get Running App.
This 9 week program is a progressive training schedule that starts you out easy, with more walking than running, and slowly gets you up to running continuously for 30 minutes. Here are some things I especially like about this app:
- It allows you to listen to your music while you run.
- A voice prompts you telling you what’s coming up next, how much longer you have, and encourages you not to give up.
- You can also limit the voice prompts if you want.
- It’s very easy to repeat a run if you feel like you need to take more time. I have done this a few times.
- It keeps track of what runs you’ve accomplished and the date of your next run.
- You can tweet or facebook your accomplishments.
I had never been someone who runs, and technically I probably don’t actually run, its really more of a jog. Whether you’re just trying to het healthier or really looking for something to train you for a 5k I would definitely suggest you try this app. The app is only $2.99 in the iTunes app store and works on iPhone and iPod touch. How exciting for you!! I did C25K last year (Jan 2011) and completed my fir st 5K in March 2011. And obviously I just completed my first half marathon a little over a week ago. I didn’t have an app at the time so I just looked at the program online and took my phone with me to use the stop watch feature. I’d never been a runner before that. Best of luck to you!
I haven’t ever run a real race- I actually don’t believe in running unless someone is chasing you. 😉
BUT- my sweet husband is convinced that we need to start running together for the bonding experience (or he’s just afraid he will pass out and wants me to be there to help him)!! We have been looking at the c25k option and this would be a great start for us!! 🙂
