There is an abundance of favorite read aloud lists that include classics like Winnie-The-Pooh and Charlotte’s Web
. I thought I would share a list of the lesser known favorite read alouds that our family has enjoyed.
- God King by
Joanne Williamson-This book was a one we read for history last year. This is a story about a young pharaoh in the days of King Hezekiah. It was a suspenseful book that kept everyone’s attention.
- Tumtum & Nutmeg: Adventures Beyond Nutmouse Hall
by Emily Bearn- These are cute stories about two little mice and how they care for the children they live with.
- The Hundred Dresses
by Eleanor Estes- This book is a great character builder, teaching how others should be treated before it’s too late.
- Kingdom’s Series
by Chuck Black- This series of books is written by a homeschool dad and parallels stories in the Bible. We have read the first three books and are excited to continue on.
- Old Mother West Wind
by Thornton Burgess- These stories are fun-filled with nature and animal characters, which will bring the outdoors to life.
- Just So Stories
by Rudyard Kipling- Have you ever wondered how the elephant got it’s trunk or the leopard it’s spots. You will find the unconventional answers in this book.
- Dangerous Journey: The Story of Pilgrim’s Progress
by Oliver Hunkin- This book is a retold version of the well known book Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan. This book shares the journey to the cross in all it’s diversions and glories.
- Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices
by Paul Fleischman- I just recently picked this book up from a garage sale and it’s the best 25 cents I’ve ever spent. This is a poetry book to be read by two people. My 9 year old loves reading these chorus-like poems with me.
- The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
by Barbara Robinson- This story about the church’s traditional Christmas pageant, becomes untraditional when the neighborhood troublemakers join the cast.
- Hush, Little One
by Anita Reith Stohs- I was given this book by my grandma and had no idea how treasured it would be. It is a lullaby book with new words to the old-“Hush, little baby, don’t say a word…” and shares how Jesus is always caring for us. I still get asked to read/sing this at bedtime.

My daughter loved The Hundred Dresses. She even went so far as to create her own hundred dresses notebook while reading that book. Love your list. So many new titles to check out. Thanks for sharing.
