What’cha Readin’?

reading

Well, it’s been a while and I’m glad you’re still out there. You are still there, aren’t you?

I can’t blame you if you’re not. It has been a crazy month, but I’m back with some of what’s been keeping me busy. Books.

Practicing Affirmation: God-Centered Praise of Those Who Are Not God
I just finished reading this and am so glad I bought it. I have so much underlined that it will be great to be able to go back and remind myself of all the great little nuggets. I knew it would be helpful to me as I struggle with giving affirmation in the first place. This book was a great reminder of why and how I should do it, based on God’s Word. The thoughts from this book help in building relationships, fostering relationships, and healing relationships. I have already been able to implement this as I parent my children, affirming them in Christ. This book was written by Pastor Sam, a pastor at my church, and I can personally attest that he practices what he preaches.

God’s Smuggler
This is the best book I’ve “read” this year and it will be hard to beat out of that space. I got it from christianaudio as one of their free monthly downloads and decided to turn it on while we took a recent drive to visit family. This book by Brother Andrew challenged me on how much faith I really have in God and how much adventure my life can have if I really depend on Him.

Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule
We have been learning about early U.S. History and have had some great read alouds. Last month was Across Five Aprils and this month we started this one. Both books have just wrecked me with all the emotions and tragedies of slavery and war.

The Hiding Place
Another free download from Christian Audio. I have been wanting to hear Ten Boom’s story for a while and am so glad I finally got to hear it. One of the stories that stuck with me was being thankful for all things, even fleas. How God can use even pesky little fleas to bless and protect us. If you haven’t read it, Read it!

Anne of Green Gables
I have seen this movie numerous times and my sister was Josie in our school play. So I am very familiar with this story, but had never read it. I really enjoyed it. I love Anne and her never-ending talk and imagination, though I think she might drive me crazy in real life.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name
I have heard great things about this children’s Bible and when I saw it was on sale for Kindle, I had to get it. I have been reading a little bit to my kids each night before bed. Even though they are a little bit older for picture Bible’s, they are enjoying it.

Visual-Spatial Learners
I am a concrete-sequential, left brained type of gal. Give me a worksheet to fill out and I love it. God blessed me with two right-brained children, who have very different learning styles than I do. They like to move, create, and visualize to learn. I need all the help I can get teaching them. I am so glad I came across this book. I am still in the midst of reading it, but have already learned so many great techniques for teaching my kids in a way that is helpful to them.

What have you been reading lately?

  1. Oh, I listened to The Hiding Place last year. It was fabulous, wasn’t it?! I got God’s Smuggler free, too and will have to listen to that now!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m really interested in the Practicing Affirmations book. 🙂
