Diet Coke is a thing around here. I don’t know if it is anywhere else, but I’ve grown up around, and continually meet people, who can’t go a day without their Diet Coke. I personally prefer Coke, but that’s beside the point.
Often we go to our Diet Coke for comfort, for a drink, a habit, but we continue to thirst. We drink this drink that’s bad for us, doesn’t quench our thirst, and only tastes good momentarily. After we’re done we feel bloated and _____(choose your own side effect(s) here).
I’m actually not here to dis pop drinkers per se. I still occasionally enjoy my own bubbly poison. I’m just using it as an analogy that God brought to mind as I read these verses.
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
The point is we try to fill up with this water from the well. Diet Coke could really be anything: coffee, chocolate, organic food, exercise, drugs, alcohol, music, busyness, noise, social media, our righteousness, our kids, etc.
We try to find our comfort there. We try to fill our emptiness with it. It feels good… but does it last? We continually go back to this well water and we continually come up empty at the end.
But there’s hope. We have Living Water! We have the Living Water that will fill that emptiness. That will be our comfort. That will give us Eternal Life!
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
If you know Jesus, if you believe in God, all you have to do is ask and He will give you living water.
God, may we turn away from the things of this earth that we choose to momentarily fill us in our emptiness and remember that only You can give living water.
