My Reading Goals for 2014

I love to read! According to Goodreads, in 2013 I read 24 books. I thought that was pretty good, for all that I have going on as a homeschooling, Average Housewife. Then I thought about what goal I should have for this year. I thought if I upped it by one, I could call it good. Then the Adventure word came up and I realized it’s time to quit being safe, even with simple things like book reading goals.

I am going to risk failing.

That’s a big sentence for me. I hate failure of any kind. I don’t want to look bad, but in Adventure you have to take risks. You have to know that failure might happen.

So, here goes…

48. My goal is to read 48 books. That is double of what I read last year. That is four books a month. It’s a lot, but I think I might be able to get it done.

I have one book already finished. The Book Thief. Read it.

What I’m currently reading:

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Prophet, Martyr, Spy by Eric Metaxas I’ve been reading this for quite a while and am only half way through. I am enjoying learning about Bonhoeffer’s life and the World War II time period, as that is what we are studying in History.

The Monster in the Hollows by Andrew Peterson This is what I’m reading as a fun read aloud to my kids. I love this series!!! The writing is so well done. I am continually in awe of the descriptive words, when I read these stories. This is the third book in the series. The fourth one, which will be the last, will be released in April.

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome is our “History read aloud”. It is a fiction story based in the time period were studying. We’re not too far into it, but the kids seem to be enjoying it already.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding is what my daughter is reading for Literature. I had never read it and I know there are some things I’ll want to discuss with her, so I thought I better keep ahead of her.

To-Reads

I have quite a list of to-reads and am always adding more. Here are a few just sitting on my shelf waiting to be read:

What are you currently reading? Do you have any reading goals for 2014?

  1. I am currently reading Stepping Heavenward and am enjoying it! I would LOVE to read 12 books in 2014 but not sure I can do it! I love to read but I love sleep more (my kids too love it when I get sleep! 🙂 I still haven’t finished my booklist for 2013! Ugh! I bought some books at the beginning of 2013 for my books to read that year, but unfortunately, I found more good books as the year went on and then never read the ones I first bought! Another UGH!

    1. I know how that is, Nicole. I felt when my kids were younger it was very hard to make it through one book!
We have so many books that I haven’t read yet, I thought about limiting myself to just those, but I just couldn’t do it.

  2. I love the idea of setting reading goals for yourself. I have done that for our read alouds, but I just can’t bring myself to do that for my own books. I’m afraid I would just fall too far behind and feel like a failure.

I am absolutely loving Holiness of God by RC Sproul.
