I believe the best thing you can do for a family, especially one that is experiencing any type of burden, is pray. When people say they are praying for me, I don’t know if they realize, but I feel and know that that is a big gift.
We serve a big God. He cares, he sees, he hears, he knows, and he remembers.( Exodus 2:23-25) He has hemmed in this family behind and before. (Psalms 139:5) We can feel all the feelings, but they are worthless unless we lay them before God, who is the only one in control.
There were (and are) times that I felt overwhelmed with sadness, anger, or frustration with God. I knew that it was okay, that God is a safe Father to share my feelings with. There were other times during my son’s cancer journey that I just didn’t want to talk to God at all and yet I was thankful to know that there were intercessors, praying for our family.
Things you can pray for a burdened family:
- Wisdom for their situation
- Protection from evil
- Peace during a stressful time
- Strength to endure
- That they would rely and trust in God
- Cast anxieties on God
- Healing
- Strengthened relationship with Christ
- Joy
- God’s Word
Praying is something anyone can do. It doesn’t cost anything, it doesn’t take a lot of time, and as Christians we are commanded to do it anyway. Take time to pray for your burdened friends on your own time, send it in a card, or even better in person.
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
